Robbery

As my son and his girlfriend were at Miami on Saturday, they were unaware that their apartment back in Winnipeg was being broken into. When they returned they found that both his laptop computer and his girlfriend's laptop computer were missing as well as about $30 in US currency. The sad part is that he used this computer for his music and it contained as most computers do, a lot of personal data. His computer belonged to his sister who passed away in April of 2005. It was not only a computer but a memory of his late sister, and he treasured it deeply.
It was something that he owned and he himself could not afford to buy. He and his girlfriend are not wealthy.
This theft is a case of the poor being preyed upon. Neither he nor his girlfriend can afford to replace these items and have no insurance. The apartment they live in has a security door that has now been broken for months and not repaired even though they had asked the superintendent of the building to have it repaired. They reported the theft late Saturday night to the police but as of this morning the police have still not arrived.
It was indeed fortunate that he had his prized guitar with him on his gig , or it would have been gone as well.
The crime in this city and province sickens me. Just after my son called me to report his theft late Saturday night or early Saturday morning the phone rang again and it was my sister calling from Portage La Prairie. Their property in Portage had been vandalized. Metal pot hanging stands had been bent and ripped from their front yard and their neighbours fence broken. Two incidents in one family on the same night!
What's the solution to this blight on society? We must have some way of protecting ourselves from this.
In my son's case I can't imagine the hurt of being victimized and then also having something so treasured and important to his music being taken, never to be seen again and doubtfully never afforded to be replaced for a long time if ever.
