The
issue below is a local one in my hometown. But it is the very 1st time one of
my letters to the local Editor has been turn down. Odd when it’s a Sun owned
paper and they will print just about anything.
You may
find it of interest, because it occurs in every sector, of every society, every
day, all the time!
The Gong Show arrived in the fair City of Morden
and reared its ugly head at the 55+ Activity Centre on North Railway, commonly
known as the Friendship Centre.
It was their Annual General Membership Meeting on
Thursday June 20th and the turnout was great. The proceedings began
with Financial and Committee Reports given.
Having done a thorough and extensive examination of
its finances and programs, the board concluded that a realignment of its
operations was required in order to meet declining Bingo revenue and diminishing
grant dollars, amongst other issues.
One of changes was to have the Centre’s staff and
volunteers handle some of the smaller catering functions themselves. Another
was to open up the facilities to food caterers that have a caterers permit or license,
in an effort to increase the bookings for the centre and it’s revenue stream.
However, the Nedohin group, along with its
perpetrators, seemed to feel that they had exclusive entitlement to the
Centre’s catering facilities. This group mounted a counter offensive on the
broad and staff members unlike I had ever previously witnessed. The assault on
the staff continued until Centre staff was compelled to respond. Current and former
Directors reported being intimated, bullied, and harassed by Centre members,
making their job function unbearable. But it didn’t end there, a motion was
made by Hugh Morrow to re-instate Janet Nedohin as the exclusive caterer along
with numerous benefits. He also requested that the motion be voted on by secret
ballot.
Motions to alter policies are the prerogative of
the broad and it was denied.
Nomination then took place, with candidates from
the floor also being nominated, resulting in representation on the board from
the Nedohin group.
The Centre should make a compete and total break
from the Nedohins, once their client commitments are met, or this issue will
continue to fester and smolder on endlessly, benefitting no one.
Much more happened and occurred at the meeting than
the incidents related above, but I believe this to be the gist of it.
As one member put it the following day, “It (the
meeting) was “disgraceful!”
